Regional Differences

Published Dec 23, 2007

Along with frequent change through time, major regional differences emerged. Different regions of Europe each had their own peculiar cultural characteristics at any given time, so that each region's stone technology has to be described with a different classification scheme. The Solutrean, for example, is characterized by carefully worked bifacial points and does not exist outside of France and Spain. In central and eastern Europe, local variants of the Gravettian continue throughout the period occupied by the Solutrean in the west. It is as if barriers to communication were arising.
