Tools in Other Materials

From the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic in Europe, modern humans used a wide variety of materials to manufacture tools and other objects. The Mousterians did not. Very few examples of objects in bone, antler, and ivory have been discovered in Mousterian sites; even these are hotly disputed by specialists. Seemingly, wood - if it was used as a raw material - would not have endured over the years. One remarkable exception is the recently excavated Mousterian site of Abric Romani in Catalonian Spain where preserved wooden objects have been found; the best preserved of these seems to be a kind of wooden slab with a large depression gouged out of its upper surface.
