It is unclear why certain tools were made of stone, while others were made exclusively in bone or antler. The answer may lie in the mechanical properties of the raw materials themselves and the effect that they have on the materials being worked. Much experimental research remains to be done in this area. Shown here is a group of Aurignacian bone awls and two elaborate Magdalenian tools of uncertain function.
