While there exist a certain number of combustion features in the Mousterian, structured fireplaces are ubiquitous in the Upper Paleolithic. They constitute one element of a broader set of innovations, including torches, lamps (seen here) and hearths by which Cro-Magnons artificially controlled heat and light.
