Open Air Sites

Clearly, people did not need to live in natural shelters such as caves and rock overhangs. Many of the most recently discovered sites are in open-air situations, often miles from any cave or rock shelter. It seems that archaeologists have perpetuated the "cave dweller" myth by looking for caves and rock shelters in their search for new sites. This approach has been the easiest way of making new discoveries, as buried open-air sites are hard to locate. They must be sought by excavating in places that often show few or no signs of artifacts on the surface. A test excavation between the two trees at center of picture resulted in the discovery of the French Magdalenian site of Mala, part of which is shown at bottom with tools in place.
