Representations of Clothing

Occasionally, we find works of art that indicate clothing. One of these, found in the cave of Gabillou in the Isle Valley of France, seems to show a person, probably a woman, wearing what is interpreted as an anorak, or parka. Also at Gabillou, a human, possibly a sorcerer, seemingly wears the skin of a bison with head still attached. Perhaps the image indicates a form of ceremonial dress. Several of the 110 or so engravings of humans from the 15,000-year-old Magdalenian site of La Marche in France seem fully dressed in tailored clothing with cuffs and collars. How true to life these representations are is questionable, however, as primary sexual characteristics are represented despite what appears to be clothing as in this engraved example from the Magdalenian site of Isturitz, France.
