Seasonal Availability of Plant and Animal Resources

Published Dec 23, 2007

Plant foods are generally available only in spring, summer, and fall. Some animals migrate and therefore come and go seasonally. Reindeer, for example, migrate twice a year in large herds.

The quality of an animal's meat or skin varies, even if the species is present year-round. During the fall reindeer migration, these animals are particularly attractive to people who hunt them because the animals are fat after a summer of feeding. Their coats are thick and lustrous in preparation for the winter ahead. During the spring migration, however, they are thin after having endured winter food shortage. Their coats are scraggly and often full of parasites such as warble flies.
