Stone Weaponry

Published Dec 23, 2007

The Upper Paleolithic also saw the development of a series of stone artifact types that seem to have been spear-points. The preceding Mousterian provides few convincing examples of spear-points, raising the question as to how widespread hunting was before 35,000 years ago. It should be remembered however, that animals can be brought down using drive-and-trap techniques that do not rely on spear-points. Five flint examples are shown here:

  1. Chatelperron point (Chatelperronian)
  2. Gravette point (Gravettian)
  3. Font-Robert point (Gravettian)
  4. Laurel-leaf point (Solutrean)
  5. Shouldered point (Magdalenian)
