The First Needles

One of the important innovations of the Upper Paleolithic was the eyed sewing needle, which first appeared about 20,000 years ago, during the Solutrean. The needles are most frequently made of ivory or bone, and many are as small as large modern examples. They have a tiny eye made by a very fine-pointed flint drill, or perforator. The "thread" used was probably animal sinew.
